Choc Orange Jaffa Smoothie by Buffy Ellen from Be Good Organics

I crafted up this vitamin C packed smoothie as part of a special Sugar-Free-Challenge some lovely health-blogger friends of mine were running (Julia and Libby from juliaandlibby.com).  Did you know raw cacao is super high in iron? It’s iron of the non-heme kind though (as is all plant-derived iron), which means it’s not as easily absorbed by the body. Solution? Vitamin C!

The vitamin C from the orange, gubinge and camu camu superfoods in this smoothie helps your body absorb as much of that iron-pumping cacao goodness as possible (perfect for us plant-loving vegetarians & vegans).  These jars of chocolatey goodness are also jam-packed with calcium, magnesium, antioxidants & mood-enhancing benefits too! If you’re a fan of jaffas, I think you might just like this smoothie as well.

Please note – if you are wanting to meet any of the specific dietary requirements below, please read my recipe notes.

Prep Time 5 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 orange
  • 1-2 tbsp raw cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp vanilla pea protein
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/4 c cashews (soaked for 4 hours and rinsed)
  • 1 tsp coconut nectar
  • 1/4 c water
  • 1-2 c ice
  • 1 tsp gubinge powder

Toppings

  • 1 tbsp raw cacao nibs
  • 1 tbsp bee pollen

Instructions

  • Blend, top with cacao nibs and bee pollen, and serve! Or pop in the freezer for an hour and eat with a spoon like icecream (soo good).

Equipment

  • Blender

Recipe Notes

  • You can also use camu camu powder instead of gubinge, it’s also a Vitamin C rich superfood!
  • I also love adding 1 Tbsp chia seeds/hemp seed oil/ground flaxseed for an omega 3 boost.
  • Adding 1/2 tsp cinnamon and/or 1/2 tsp vanilla powder also makes this smoothie even more delish.
