Chia Seeds

Pure Wellbeing

  • Chia seeds have been grown and eaten since as early as 3500BC by the Mayans and Aztecs in Mexico. Aztec warriors and running messengers would use them as a high-energy food to maintain their strength and endurance. Chia in fact means 'strength' in Mayan.

Derived from the herb mint family, Chia seeds are one of our favourite superfoods. They are the highest plant-based source of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids, making them a super sustainable alternative to seafood and fish oil. Omega 3 can't be produced by our bodies and therefore must be consumed. Omega 3's are known for their role in encouraging healthy skin, hair, nails, joints, and brain function; improving post-workout recovery and cardiovascular function; increasing metabolism and promoting fat-burning; and preventing heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and arthritis.

Chia seeds are also a fantastic source of complete protein (20% protein), as they contain all eight essential amino acids. They are rich in dietary fibre making them great for maintaining digestive health. They're also high in anti-aging antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium. To read more about this amazing superfood, check out our article here.
  • Add a tablespoon of Chia Seeds to your favourite smoothie; sprinkle on breakfast cereal or yogurt; or add to salads. Use to make your own raw cacao bliss balls, or our favourite - Coconut Cashew Chia Cream, a wonderful yoghurt/cream replacement. Add to your bircher muesli overnight too, as they'll absorb the liquid and creating a nice thick creamy texture. Or mix into your favourite plant-based milk along with some flavourings to make a delicious chia pudding. See our Recipes tab for more ideas.

Use to make a great egg replacement - perfect for plant-based cholesterol-free baking. Simply mix 1 Tablespoon chia seeds with 3 Tablespoons water and leave for 15 mins until it form a gel - this equates to 1 egg. Use in any baking or pancake recipe that require eggs.

Note: Make sure you drink plenty of water when consuming Chia Seeds, as they absorb lots of water and are high in dietary fibre.
